From a Mother’s Heart

The heart of the mother, the mother of all hearts, fills with dread every morning as she wakes up her child.
Her hands tremble as she packs the child’s lunch.
Her moist eyes, try to fight back visions of terror.
Her legs reluctantly walk her child off to school.
Her ears, all along the way, are always open for anything amiss, her mind on high alert.
She watches silently as her child mingles with other children, waving a good-bye before he walks through the doors of the school.
Her mouth words a quiet prayer before blasting off a heart-ripping, yet equally soul touching question.
“What good is a society with its myriad knights and weapons, its unending debates of gun laws, and mindless obsession with violence, if it can’t even protect its schools and children, can’t figure out where to fight its battles, and can’t console a mother’s heart?”
Slowly she turns, wipes her tears as she walks back, with a hope to see another day…
